Lake Poerua is wonderfully secluded. Public have limited access to the lake as Dept of Conservation land surrounds one half while the other is privately owned. A remote gravel road allows the odd adventurer a stop. Lodge guests can access and enjoy Lake Poerua by walking 5 minutes down a private road.

There are wild red deer in the bush and mountains around the lodge along with chamois on the tops.

Brown trout are plentiful in the lake and we encourage a catch and release practice. A walk along the lake edge is a bird-watchers paradise with wild ducks, geese, swans, wekas, pukekos, keas and the occasional glimpse of the kotuku (white heron) to name but a few.

Catch and Release is encouraged.

Canoeing is a very popular past-time on Lake Poerua. Tranz Alpine glides pass in the background.
